Pomegranate Plant
Irrigation system for pomegranate in Sicily
Plant near Marsala (Sicily) for the cultivation of pomegranates on approximately 20 hectares of land with power available from a well. The plants have a planting space of 6 x 3.5 metres. The plant was sized to meet the maximum expected requirement of 7000 cubic meters/hectare. The source is at a lower altitude than the rest of the system.
The Project
16 mm drip lines were used with 2.4 litres/hour pressure-compensating in-line devices with a 0.5 metre pitch.
The use of 4 main 110 mm pipelines (with related bypasses) made it possible to manage the system in 2 large shifts in the event of lower needs (young plant, use of a single drip line, supply only from a well). In the case of greater needs (mature plant, double drip line, feeding only from well and reservoir) the shifts become 4.
Project objective
The system was designed to consider 2 different supplies (from a well and from a tank), 2 different configurations for the laterals (single drip line and double drip line) and therefore dynamically satisfy the growing irrigation need of the plants, from planting at full maturity. Great attention was also paid to the pumping system so that it can cover every expected hydraulic condition and in particular the important variation in flow rate required.
